Changing Cancer Care

Hollings Cancer Center is a leader in transforming the fight against cancer!

Pediatric Oncology Clinical Trials

What if you could save a child's life? What if you could help provide access to a drug that stops a child's cancer from growing? These are our hopes for every child diagnosed with cancer, but they will only come with research. On average, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center diagnoses and treats over 100 new pediatric cancer patients per year, which is over a third of all new pediatric cancer cases in the state. As is typical of top-tier pediatric oncology programs in the United States, all newly diagnosed pediatric cancer patients at Hollings are evaluated for participation in a clinical research trial, often considered the best chance for the sickest patients.

Clinical trials are the key to making progress against cancer.

Hollings Cancer Center Leadership

Participating in pediatric clinical trials is part of what sets Hollings Cancer Center apart from other cancer centers. Our physician-scientists collaborate with top researchers from around the world to bring the latest and most promising cancer treatments to Hollings. Through the MUSC Children’s Oncology Group (COG) clinical trials team, Hollings has access to a network of more than 200 hospitals and 5,000 health care professionals dedicated to finding answers, sharing results and saving children's lives.

Hope & Healing

MUSC and Hollings Cancer Center are committed to the South Carolina Community.

Impact & Opportunities

Hollings Cancer Center has access to the latest and most advanced treatment options available, but running clinical trials is very costly, with a significant portion of expenses not covered.Enabling pediatric patients to go on trial requires partnership between theNational Institutes of Health (NIH), insurance companies, the medical center, and philanthropic donors. To run the current pediatric cancer trials at Hollings, it costs the cancer center more than $200,000 per year. NIH provides less than one percent of this cost, and insurance companies do not cover the research costs associated with clinical trials. For each pediatric clinical trial and patient, Hollings incurs significant deficits, causing the hospital to depend on philanthropic efforts and other sources of income to offer the most advanced therapies and options.
